Walking from the Old Vicarage B&B, Edgton

As it turned out 2020 wasn’t the best year to start our B&B business. The house project was, at last, at a stage where we could welcome visitors, the website designed and operational – and then the first covid lockdown was announced!

But the strangeness of the year and the necessity to stay local gave us the opportunity to explore our corner of the South Shropshire Hills (ANOB). A time for looking, walking and being in this beautiful county.

We have found a number of satisfying walks that start from our doorstep. A favourite is the one to the Borrow hill fort above the village of Hopesay. We follow the quiet lane down to the pretty village and climb through pastureland to the bottom of the fort. There the path goes through mixed woodland so only when you arrive at the top do you see the marvellous views and realise how perfect a spot it is to watch for invaders! Part of the defensive walls were planted with oak trees which have been twisted by wind and covered with lichens.

Circling the fort you can then make your way back by footpaths through Barlow Farm and return a slightly different way.
